About the Certificate:
This certificate program focuses upon gaining an understanding of the field of dance/movement and body-based therapies with exposure to different approaches and theoretical models.
Once a learner completes the Certificate in Dance/Movement Arts in Therapy Studies Program, one has the option of continuing with the ADTA credentialing process through Alternate Route to qualify for the Dance/Movement Therapist Registry (DTR) or with further hands-on experience, qualify for the Academy of Dance/Movement Therapist Registry (ADTR). The American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA) recognizes those holding the DTR or ADTR as qualified and trained Dance/Movement Therapists, who may claim this title.
Current professionals licensed in mental health or social work or related fields may complete the Certificate in Dance/Movement Therapy Studies to gain a better understanding of the dance/movement therapy field and may incorporate the approaches in their current work. However, one may not consider themselves as a Dance/Movement Therapist as recognized by the ADTA.
What is Dance/Movement Therapy?
As defined by the American Dance Therapy Association, Dance/Movement Therapy is the the psychotherapeutic use of movement as a process which furthers the emotional, social, cognitive, and physical integration of the individual.
Who Should Apply?
The certificate program is designed for anyone interested in using dance/movement for therapeutic and clinical contexts. Individuals who would benefit from the program include graduate students in psychology, counseling, social work, educational counseling, post professional dancers wishing to develop an alternate career, current mental health professionals who wish to gain more knowledge in dance/movement therapy.
No previous experience in dance or movement is necessary to participate in the program, however learners are expected to pursue on-going dance or movement training while in the program.
